June 22, 1963 Socorro was created as a distinct and independent municipality in the province of Oriental Mindoro through the approval of Republic Act No. 3609. It was officially inaugurated on July 27, 1963. Prior to becoming an independent municipality, Socorro was known as Barangay Catiningan and was part of the municipality of Pola. Its
