Thailand’s Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued its fourth warning for heavy to very heavy rain nationwide from today until July 3, urging residents in at risk areas to watch for flash floods and runoff.
The warning, issued at 5am today, said rain would increase across the country, with heavy to very heavy falls expected in East Thailand and the western coast of South Thailand.
TMD attributed the wet spell to a monsoon trough crossing North Thailand and the upper northeastern region, combined with a strengthening southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, the Thailand mainland, and the Gulf of Thailand.
Residents in the affected areas were told to watch for flash floods and runoff, particularly near foothills, waterways, and low lying land.
Sea conditions in the upper Andaman Sea will turn rough from tomorrow until July 3, with waves of 2 to 3 metres, rising above 3 metres in thunderstorm areas. The lower Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand will see waves of about 2 metres, climbing above 2 metres where storms hit.
TMD advised sailors to navigate with caution and avoid thunderstorm areas, while small boats in the upper Andaman Sea were told to stay ashore for the duration of the warning.
The department asked the public to plan travel carefully and to follow further updates through its website at www.tmd.go.th or its hotlines on 0 2399 4012 to 13 and 1182, available 24 hours a day. TMD said its next bulletin would be issued at 5pm today, reported KhaoSod.
