Thailand braces for storms and rough seas as TMD issues weather warning.

Thunderstorms are forecast across large parts of Thailand today, with the Thai Meteorological Department warning of dangerously rough seas in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand.

The TMD’s 24 hour forecast, issued on July 5, points to a monsoon trough draining across upper North Thailand and northern Laos into tropical storm Maysak, combined with a strong southwest monsoon sweeping the Andaman Sea, mainland Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.

Residents in upper North Thailand, upper Northeast Thailand and East Thailand should prepare for very heavy rain in some areas. The TMD flagged a risk of flash floods and runoff, particularly near foothills, waterways and low lying land.

Sea conditions have also worsened. Waves in the upper Andaman Sea are running 2 to 3 metres high, rising above three metres in thundery areas. The lower Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand are seeing waves of about 2 metres, exceeding two metres where storms hit.

The TMD urged boats in both the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand to sail with caution and avoid thundery patches altogether. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea have been told to stay in port until conditions ease, reported Matichon.
