Lock Upp Season 2 Episode 4 Review: The First Chargesheet Brings High Stakes, but the Personal Attacks Go Too Far

The season’s first Chargesheet is filed in Lock Upp Season 2 Episode 4, and things get messy from the first minute itself. With tensions high among contestants as everyone questions Akanksha Chamola and Harshad Chopda about their choices for the last two episodes, people clash over dissatisfaction for not being saved. The new concept demands strategic thinking and immediately fractures existing relationships inside the jail, bringing into question whether existing relationships outside the jail were ever strong enough in the first place.

However, this episode highlights the downfalls of the format – while the gameplay has moments of enjoyment, it ultimately can’t make up for the lack of tasks, the contestants’ lack of a moral fibre and the sheer lack of self-awareness.

Lock Upp Season 2 Episode 4 Review

The First Chargesheet Raises the Stakes

Farah Khan brings to the contestants the season’s first chargesheet, which places Akanksha Chamola, Harshad Chopda and Sunita Ahuja on the hot seat as they have to choose whom they want to put in the danger zone. This results in a lengthy discussion among the four, as they have to understand whether the different contestants have been able to overcome the allegations against them. Of the 15 inside, in the end, they choose Shreya Kalra, Sufi Motiwala, Shresta Iyer, Madhuri Jain Grover and Riyaz Ali to be in the danger zone.

This new element, of course, invokes tension in the jail as those in the hot seat refuse to take accountability. While Chopda and Chamola tell the contestants that they have chosen those who called them spineless previously, it doesn’t get well received as everyone wants themselves saved. The situation lets viewers look deeper into the contestants and their habits as it highlights how little self-awareness some people have when their actions are questioned.

Shreya Kalra Refuses to Let the Decision Go

The twist immediately injects tension as those in the hot seat find themselves angry at the three for choosing them, questioning their logic and reminding them that they have been friends for a long time. With the visible consequences staring back at them, it’s Shreya Kalra and Madhuri Jain Grover who make the most fuss, with a tense fight taking place between Kalra and Chamola. While the latter tries to discuss the reasons, Kalra refuses to take responsibility for her behaviour and tells her that she won’t change for anyone.

The situation highlights how quickly a game plan can turn into a personal issue as Kalra constantly brings up how she and Chamola are friends and she shouldn’t have nominated her because of it. Viewers will be able to see through the facade of big words and twisted logic into how some people are unable to take responsibility for their actions or simply see this as a part of the game. While emotional reactions are understandable, the repeated arguments about this topic tend to feel cyclic after a while, echoing issues that we have been seeing over the past 3 episodes.

Familiar Rivalries Continue Without Much Progress

In the midst of this, familiar conversations between Shreya Kalra, Akanksha Chaudhary and Yogesh Rawat continue in this episode itself, which not only feels childish at this point, but is also highly obnoxious. Unless you’re a child, these unnecessary conversations bog down the episode because things just go round and round without concluding.

Similarly, a disagreement between Ram Kapoor and Akanksha Chamola takes place thanks to a discussion surrounding forgiving a partner after infidelity. While it’s fine for individuals to not agree on topics, as these are highly personal and individual issues, the fight is unnecessary at best, as Chamola’s anger seems misplaced. It will sometimes make viewers question the age of these contestants and why they get triggered in this manner on such a huge platform.

The Episode’s Most Serious Moments Deserve Greater Sensitivity

However, the main problem in the episode arises from more sensitive topics that are not just emotional but also require far more sensitivity than Netflix was able to give. Throughout the season, we see Sufi Motiwala and Varun Yadav clashing over the latter’s comments about Motiwala’s sexuality. While one might think that Yadav is simply uninformed, the things that he says are extremely problematic. As a result, Motiwala is seen constantly breaking down as he recounts the struggles he has endured since childhood.

While you empathise with him, the worst part in all this is when Shreya outs Chamola as bisexual to Sufi and the two giggle about it in front of the cameras. It’s actually disgusting and showcases how problematic these people are. While Sufi was completely fine speaking up about his own issues with homophobic language and whatnot, he’s unbothered when another member of the LGBTQ+ community was outed to the world before they were ready to. The hypocrisy is shocking and is one of the worst parts of the show.

Final Verdict

In the end, Lock Upp Season 2 Episode 4 leaves you disturbed and frustrated by the blatant disrespect some people show toward others because of their preconceived notions. The editing of the episodes is also very confusing and takes away from the intensity of the show. However, in the end, there’s just nothing that holds your interest for 60 minutes, mostly because, if you get down to it, there’s not enough content here other than people fighting for no reason.
