MANILA, Philippines – The Iglesia ni Cristo (INC)-led rally entered its third day on Thursday, July 2, after organizers moved the gathering from the Edsa People Power Monument in Quezon City to Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila.
The transfer came after the Quezon City Department of Public Order and Safety (DPOS) revoked the group’s permit for another day of assembly, citing the severe traffic disruption caused by the surprised rally along Edsa and White Plains Avenue.
Manila City officials, however, said no permit was required for the gathering since Liwasang Bonifacio is a designated Freedom Park.
Highlights
- The INC-led gathering is in support of Sen. Rodante Marcoleta, who is about to be charged with plunder within the week, in connection with the P75 million undeclared campaign donation
- The Tuesday rally had no permit, while Wednesday’s rally was allowed after organizers secured a permit valid from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- The past two rallies were attended by Marcoleta, Sens. Alan Peter Cayetano and Imee Marcos
- Traffic along EDSA has returned to normal after the rally site in Quezon City was cleared
- INC says the rally opposes “selective justice” in connection with the Ombudsman’s planned filing of charges against the senator.
