A former district chief officer in Nong Prue, Kanchanaburi, and a village headman have been arrested for their involvement in a scheme that fraudulently granted Thai nationality to foreign children. The operation, stemming from an inquiry in Nakhon Ratchasima, uncovered irregularities in birth registrations.
On June 5 at 3pm, a press conference was held at Nong Prue district office, Kanchanaburi. Deputy Interior Minister Jesada Thaiseth, alongside senior officials from the Department of Provincial Administration, the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission, and Nong Prue police, announced the success of “Operation Dragon’s Tail EP.3,” which targeted a fraudulent birth registration network.
Jesada said multiple agencies collaborated to arrest a district chief officer and brokers involved in falsely registering the births of at least ten children of Chinese and Myanmar descent, granting them Thai nationality. The fraud took place in Nong Prue between April 2025 and February 2026. At least 15 individuals, including officials and brokers, were implicated. Three key suspects were arrested: a former Nong Prue district chief officer who had transferred to Thong Pha Phum district four months prior, a village headman who processed residence transfers, and a Thai man believed to be a broker.
Deputy Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration Witthaya Sirinukul said the investigation extended from findings in Pho Klang subdistrict, Nakhon Ratchasima, where fraudulent birth certificates were linked back to Nong Prue. Initial birth records in Nakhon Ratchasima listed a Thai father and Chinese mother, but further checks revealed the records originated from Nong Prue, with a Thai father and Myanmar mother. The mother’s registration had been transferred to a local village headman’s residence, then to Nakhon Ratchasima, with her nationality altered to Chinese in the process.
Arrest warrants were issued upon discovery of the discrepancies. Authorities noted this case represents only part of a wider network, and investigations continue.
Kanchanaburi Governor Warittha Sanguansermsri said the province was aware of the issue from March, following reports from Nong Prue district office. Investigations confirmed improper birth registrations, leading to the revocation of five fraudulent records. Disciplinary action, including suspension from government duties, is being pursued against the former district chief officer and the village headman.
Nong Prue Police Superintendent Pol. Col. Niyom Niya said complaints triggered an official police investigation, with evidence leading to arrest warrants and the capture of the suspects. The case will be forwarded to the National Anti-Corruption Commission for further legal proceedings, reported KhaoSod.
