A Mystery Board Covered in Several Red Strings

The plot this season follows two different mysteries – one involving the Max Hastings trial and the other involving the mysterious and sudden disappearance of Jamie Reynolds. The series this time is clearly darker as, from the first minute, Pip’s emotion unstability is clear in every minute of the runtime. There’s not a moment when you don’t see her struggling with her choices, and the series gives her far too many of those.

The panic builds at every moment, bringing a dark and emotional truth to light that is devastating in many ways. The desperation to find Jamie and the emotional toll of the trial make us acutely aware that the kids have grown up and they are, thus, facing adult consequences. Pip is consumed by the desperation to find the truth at any cost. As her personal life and sanity are hampered, she looks helpless but determined.

This dark edge gives the storyline a lot to work with, and it’s able to hold on to the thrill and anticipation that it needed in a mystery series. Pip’s maturity is also showcased in every scene, although we can’t help but feel some sort of way for her declining mental state. Unlike season 1, season 2 focuses more on the underbelly of a crime thriller, showcasing the toll it takes on those who make the chase their personal mission. The compelling mystery and the devastating ending only make it stronger, and as the episodes move on, the story reminds us of Pip’s inability to separate justice from obsession.

Pip Fitz-Amobi is no longer playing detective; she’s Surviving

Andie Bell’s murder case not only affected Pip, but it also destroyed a lot of people who were close to her. So much so that she had stepped away from mystery-solving. However, Connor’s insistence brings her back into a mess that was too deep for her, pushing her to extremes. The oppressiveness of Little Kilton is apparent in every scene as Pip finds one shocking truth after another.

Her character becomes the lifeblood of the show this season, and it’s interesting to see her character come undone as she gets in over her head. There are no remnants of the fun detective thriller that we saw last season. This season showcases the raw consequences of digging where you’re not supposed to, especially when the detective is a young 18-year-old girl.

Emma Myers Continues To Be the Show’s Greatest Strength

Emma Myers is fantastic in this season as she teeters between stable and unstable. Myers carries the emotional weight of the series with ease. She is left to feel overwhelmed and angry, and the series benefits from it. There’s no perfect resolution or a happy ending; rather, it’s messy and disturbing, and Myers embodies her role effortlessly. Viewers will be able to see the pain and hurt in her eyes as the revelations leave her devastated.

On the other hand, Zain Iqbal returns as Ravi and is the rock that keeps Pip anchored. It’s nice to watch a character who is truly and believably level-headed. While most good guys in shows overdo it, Iqbal’s Ravi keeps it grounded and believable, and thus, his unyielding support for Pip is the most heartfelt part about it. His chemistry with Myers is also quite natural, which gives the show a lightness that it required among all the heartbreak and devastation.

One of the things that makes A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder Season 2 so enjoyable is how great it looks. It’s more cinematic than its predecessors, and the colder colour grading and claustrophobic framing reinforce the emotional turmoil Pip is going through. The direction leans into discomfort, and there’s a noticeable shift from the glossy YA aesthetics. It also helps the series to step away from being just a teen thriller to something more intense.

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder Season 2 is a noticeable improvement from the first season and is endlessly enjoyable. It taps into the emotions of its protagonist so well that it’s hard not to follow along as she desperately tries to right the wrongs. However, things aren’t always in her hands, and it deepens the devastation more than she could’ve imagined. Overall, this one’s very well done.
