A 20 year old student has admitted to being a member of the ‘Oreo Gang’ after a white Mitsubishi Xpander struck a police officer at an alcohol checkpoint in Bangkok. He denies consuming alcohol before the crash on May 22.
The incident took place at around 1.30am on Bang Na-Trat Road, where 59 year old Police Lieutenant Colonel Taran Piromjitjaroen was seriously injured while manning the checkpoint. The driver, Thanabat, and a passenger identified as Akharawin, both 20 year old students from Chiang Rai, were arrested at the scene. Officers found a Glock 19 pistol loaded with 24 rounds in the spare tyre compartment.
Thanabat faces charges of possessing firearms and ammunition without a permit, carrying a weapon in public without justification, and causing serious injury through negligence. Akharawin faces charges of firearm possession and carrying a weapon publicly without cause.
Investigators found that Akharawin had a history of involvement in five prior cases related to assault and firearm possession, and is linked to the Oreo Gang, a youth group connected to violent incidents and weapon possession earlier in 2025.
At 3pm, Bang Na officers detained Akharawin for questioning. He initially refused to speak to the media but later confirmed he remains a member of the Oreo Gang. He said the pair had spent the evening at a nightclub in the Rangsit area and were on their way home when the crash occurred, insisting neither had been drinking, reported KhaoSod.
When asked whether dizziness from medication had played a role, Akharawin was direct.
“No, it’s not.”
