Obsession Review
In Curry Barker’s Obsession, love becomes a point of contention as Bear and Nikki vie for each other’s attention… but in a very different way! The film, with fantastic performances from Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette, wins thanks to its equally fantastic execution, where everything is a play of light and darkness. Bear’s obsession with Nikki is equally traumatic to witness as hers with him, and as they try to balance one another’s insanity, a lot of blood, sweat and tears are shed.
The best thing about the movie is how it subverts expectations while playing right in the middle of tropes, creating a terrifying atmosphere where you are constantly walking on eggshells. There aren’t a lot of things to dislike about the film because it’s able to bring forth a very real and relatable story and executes it extremely well.
Obsession Ending Explained

A Love Story Turned Nightmare
The story was initially quite simple – a lonely and awkward young man is desperately in love with his childhood best friend and makes a silly wish using a novelty gift. However, things soon take an obsessive turn when the wish turns out to be true, turning not just Bear, but also Nikki’s life, irrevocably changed.
What Does the One Wish Willow Actually Do?
The One Wish Willow isn’t just a silly game – it’s actually able to bring anyone’s wishes to life, whatever they may be. But the catch is that one person can only make one wish. People asking for a wish must be very careful about what they want, or things can go haywire. For example, when Bear asks Nikki to love him more than anyone in the world, it turns her into an obsessive person who doesn’t know anything beyond him. He initially thinks that it’s MDMA, but that’s not actually the case.

Was the Real Nikki Still Alive?
Eventually, we learn that the Nikki whom Bear has been dating isn’t the real Nikki at all, but some sort of demon possessing her body, thanks to the One Wish Willow. The real Nikki is alive and still inside her body, but trapped in her subconscious and begging to get out. We see that clearly when, after Ian’s house party, the real Nikki begs Bear to kill her after the demon goes to sleep, but Bear, due to fear and his obsession to possess Nikki, refuses to comply.
Why Does Bear Decide to Kill Himself?

We learn early on that the only way to end the curse is to kill Bear, the person who made the wish. Unfortunately, he is unable to go through with his decision. In the end, when he realises that things are going out of hand, he finally decides to take his own life. He tries to shoot himself first, but when he is unable to go through with it, he decides to overdose on sleeping pills and end the curse.
What Was Nikki’s Final Wish?
Just when Bear tries to die, Nikki intervenes and makes a wish with the remaining One Wish Willow. It immediately makes Bear stop what he’s doing and run to Nikki and lovingly embrace her. Although we don’t know what her wish was, it’s evident that she decided to wish for Bear to love her the way that she loves him.
Why Does Bear Die?

Bear eventually dies in Nikki’s arms because he was never able to throw up the sleeping pills that he had taken, thanks to Nikki’s wish.
What Does the Ending Mean?
The ending showcases Nikki about to shoot himself, but, in the end, thankfully, she is finally broken out of the curse due to Bear’s death. She looks on, horrified as her friends lie dead around her, with her prints everywhere. The audience is left to wonder what her life would look like after this and whether she would ever be able to live a normal life.
