OTT Reality Shows 2026: Why Every Streaming Platform Is Betting Big on Hindi Competition Shows

If it feels like there’s a new Hindi reality show launching every few weeks in 2026, that is not an illusion. Minus the music and dance formats, the genre Indian television has always leaned on for years, and what’s left is something narrower and newer: a wave of strategy and competition shows, all built around the same basic idea, launched within months of each other, across different platforms.

Here’s what’s actually airing or officially confirmed this year, why it’s happening all at once, and what it means if you’re trying to keep up.

The Shows

OTT platforms are running the shows. Colors and JioHotstar brought back Khatron Ke Khiladi for its fifteenth season this year, with Rohit Shetty returning as host for the stunt-based format. The same pairing also launched The 50 in January, a fifty-contestant strategy game built around alliances and betrayals, produced by Banijay Asia, with an added interactive layer letting viewers back contestants directly.

Netflix entered this space directly with Lock Upp: Sach Ya Saza returned for its second season on June 27, moving from ALTBalaji and MX Player to Netflix exclusively, with Farah Khan and Riteish Deshmukh replacing Kangana Ranaut as the show’s jailers. Fourteen celebrity contestants, six weeks, and a jail-themed format built on tasks and revealed secrets, calling it a redemption journey.

Prime Video has two entries of its own. Alliance, hosted by Kunal Kemmu and also produced by Banijay Asia, runs sixteen contestants in teams of four through a pure social-strategy format across roughly forty-two episodes. The Traitors India is returning for a second season on the same platform, with Karan Johar back as host for the deception-and-deduction format that made its first season, filmed at Suryagarh Palace in Rajasthan.

Then there’s the comedy-adjacent end of the same impulse: India’s Got Latent, Samay Raina’s talent-and-roast format, is into its second season, on Netflix and YouTube with new episodes every two weeks. Laughter Chefs has been running its third season on Colors and JioHotstar since November, mixing celebrity contestants, cooking, and comedy in a lower-stakes but still competition-driven structure. And by September, Bigg Boss is expected to return for its twentieth season on Colors and JioHotstar.

There’s a fifth platform in the mix too, once gaming formats are counted. Playground, which streams free on MX Player by Prime Video, returned for its fifth season on August 1, this time built around a three-mentor panel: two-time champion Elvish Yadav, first-time mentor Tejasswi Prakash, and digital creator Aarush Bhola, each leading a team of contestants through six weeks of gaming challenges. It’s a lower-stakes, YouTuber-and-influencer-driven cousin of the strategy formats above, but it draws from the same pool of digital-first personalities and runs on the same season-over-season momentum; this is its fifth outing since 2022, longer-running than most of the shows on this list.

That’s nine shows, one language, five platforms, inside a single calendar year.

Why is it happening now

None of these is music or talent-search formats, the genre India’s reality TV has traditionally run on almost year-round for the longest time. What connects all eight is a specific structure: put a group of people under pressure, give them a game with rules built for betrayal and alliance-switching, film the fallout, and let the tasks generate both drama and short-form clips.

That structure is efficient in ways a singing competition isn’t. It doesn’t need an audition circuit spanning a dozen cities before a single episode airs; reality TV show casting can happen quickly around a smaller, known pool of contestants rather than months of open tryouts. It’s also built to produce shareable moments by design; a betrayal, an elimination twist, a contestant walking away from a win on principle, the kind of clip that travels on social media independent of anyone actually watching the full episode.

Production timelines are shorter too: a strategy or social-deduction format can be shot in a single location over a matter of weeks, compared with the months a music or dance format needs to move across cities, judges, and elimination rounds.

The format also works across a starkly different cost structure per platform. Netflix and Prime Video get a genre that plays well internationally without needing translation-heavy playback or language-dependent judging panels. A strategy game translates across markets far more easily than a singing contest built around Hindi film music. Meanwhile, Colors and JioHotstar can keep running celebrity-led versions on broadcast alongside their streaming simulcast, letting one production serve two distribution channels at once.

Once one platform proves the format draws numbers, the incentive for every other platform is to run its own version rather than cede the format entirely, which is functionally what’s happened here. One can even witness crossovers of OTT reality shows these days, with everything being telecast simultaneously on OTT platforms.

There’s also a casting layer to this that is not talked about as often. With this many parallel competition formats running, the pool of celebrities willing and available to do OTT reality TV gets stretched across all shows at once rather than concentrated on one or two formats a year. Names move between these shows in the same season; a contestant linked to one show’s casting rumours turns up confirmed on another a few months later, and hosts themselves are increasingly tied to more than one format running concurrently. That is a direct downstream effect of four platforms competing for the same relatively small pool of people willing to do this kind of television at once.

This also changes how contestants are chosen in the first place. When shows need recognisable faces in the same twelve months, casting directors lean harder on people who already have a built-in social media following, since a contestant’s existing fanbase does double duty as an audience the show doesn’t have to build from scratch. That favours influencers, YouTubers, and social-media-first personalities over traditional television actors in a way that was not as pronounced even two or three years ago, and it partly explains why the same handful of names keep resurfacing in casting rumours across different shows.

What it means for the viewers

None of this makes any single OTT reality TV show less watchable on its own. But the accumulation changes what it now actually requires to follow OTT reality TV in India. A few years ago, keeping up with the genre meant checking in on one or two flagship shows a year, usually months apart, each with room to build its own audience and news cycle before the next one arrived. Now it means tracking overlapping seasons across streaming and broadcast simultaneously, each with its own contestant pool, elimination logic, and social media cycle running in parallel, sometimes with two or three of these shows airing new episodes in the same week.

That’s less a comment on any individual show’s quality and more a description of how much appointment-level attention the format now demands if you’re trying to follow more than one of these at a time with eight shows live or confirmed in a single year, is increasingly the default rather than the exception. It also means less room for any one show to dominate a news cycle the way a single Bigg Boss season once did on its own; attention now gets split across whichever shows happen to be airing that particular week.

It’s also reshaping how these shows are marketed. Instead of a single show building weeks of pre-launch buzz uncontested, promotional windows now overlap: a Traitors India teaser might land the same week Bigg Boss 2026 casting leaks break, competing for the same entertainment news cycle and the same viewer attention span. That is pushing platforms toward shorter, more frequent promotional bursts rather than a single sustained campaign, and toward clip-based marketing on social media that can cut through the noise of seven other shows all doing the same thing at once.

The Bottom Line

Many shows. Multiple platforms. One genre. All within the same twelve months, and that’s before a single music or dance format is even counted.
