Nothing to Lose Review: An Emotional Family Drama That Loses Itself in an Unbelievable Twist

Nothing to Lose Review: Films about pediatric cancer are hard to watch. It’s no surprise that there’s an obvious feeling of gloom throughout the runtime that viewers won’t be able to overcome, regardless of how nonsensical the rest of the film is. However, Nothing to Lose movie, on Netflix, takes things a bit too far as it showcases a mother’s desperation to protect her child and takes it to an extreme that feels nothing less than stupid. Audiences understand Jada and Paul’s desperation and grief, but it’s hard to connect to her plight when she takes a hospital hostage.

A Heartbreaking Premise That Immediately Pulls You In

As mentioned previously, stories about children suffering from cancer are heartbreaking as it is. Put a desperate couple struggling to conceive getting hit with this news is even worse. Thus, Jada and Paul’s predicament and desperation are obvious. Viewers will find themselves immediately drawn to their cause as they try to figure out a way to save their son, whose life is slowly getting depleted in front of their eyes. Everyone’s hands are tied as donors are hard to come by, which makes the situation all the more bleak.

It’s in these quiet moments that Nothing to Lose gets under your skin. Pacing and absurdity aside, the core premise of a mother trying to save her son will ring true for almost everyone. However, despite a moving premise, the film somehow isn’t able to hold on to the pacing for long enough to make this an impactful drama. The movie mostly goes into melodrama territory as it drudges on about Jada and Paul’s infertility journey and a painful look inside the hospital after Noa’s diagnosis. The story hardly moves here, and viewers will find themselves bored as they wait for something to happen.

When the Story Takes an Unexpected Turn

However, things take a turn for the worse when, suddenly, out of the blue, mild-mannered Jada turns into a criminal, breaks into a house and takes the hospital hostage. The film, for some reason, takes a hard pivot into the thriller category, in a bid to showcase that she will go to any lengths for her son. While the emotional is great, it doesn’t translate too well when it comes to believability and character arcs. The grounded melodrama becomes a thriller melodrama, and it’s impossible to believe something like this unfolding.

The problem, however, is that the film itself stops making sense after this. The pacing falters, and the story that unfolds is all over the place. Things randomly happen because it’s convenient to the story and not because it makes sense organically. It lacks a natural escalation of tension that would not only make viewers sit on the edge of their seats, but also feel the heaviness of Noa’s increasing plight.

Strong Performances Carry the Emotional Weight

All said and done, Nawell Madani committed performance as Jada, and it’s easy to get caught up in Jada’s madness thanks to Madani. She brings out every emotion necessary of a grieving mother desperate to save her son, and while her actions are not written well, she commits to them thoroughly. Exhausted and deeply afraid, her quieter moments feel extremely impactful. Even when the screenplay goes off the rails, her performance remains grounded. Everyone else, too, does a great job, especially Paul Fouré, who plays Noa well.

A Story That Wants to Say Something Bigger

While the escalation in Nothing to Lose is a bit much, at its core, it wants to highlight how criminally underfunded child cancer research is. Exploring impossible moral choices, it’s not hard to understand and empathise with what the movie is trying to tell us and how easily family healthcare systems fail their patients thanks to not prioritising what needs to be done. The helplessness of watching a child battle cancer is nothing short of terrible, and the film does a good job of bringing forth an important topic of discussion.

Unfortunately, it does a terrible job of turning these ideologies into a coherent movie that actually makes sense. Instead, sometimes the movie feels like it’s stringing a bunch of thoughts together, hoping they make a big impact.

Final Verdict

In the end, Nothing to Lose Netflix has its heart in the right place. Unfortunately, the movie just isn’t arresting enough thanks to how unnecessarily it escalates and, eventually, doesn’t say anything more than a convenient end meant to satisfy audiences. Unfortunately, its moving performances aren’t enough to keep viewers engaged throughout the runtime.
