Key developments so far:
- Duterte allies led by lawyer Israelito Torreon filed a 16-page urgent motion before the Supreme Court seeking to stop the trial and questioned the authority of Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero to preside over the impeachment court.
- The challenge echoes objections earlier raised by Sens. Alan Peter Cayetano and Pia Cayetano, who argued that Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian should preside over the trial.
- Prosecutors presented NBI Senior Agent John Mark Calilung, who authenticated digital evidence related to the alleged threats. His testimony was met with repeated objections from the defense.
- Prosecutors also announced plans to call Vice President Duterte as a hostile witness during the presentation of Article IV.
- The vice president showed up in the Senate hours before the proceedings but did not appear before the impeachment court.
- The impeachment court is expected to hear more witness testimonies, rule on objections, and receive additional documentary and digital evidence as the prosecution continues its case. /dp
